Digital payments in Italy continue to grow at a rapid pace. According to the Innovative Payments Observatory of Politecnico di Milano, in 2024 digital payments overtook cash for the first time in total transaction value, with an 8.5% year-on-year increase. BANCOMAT — used by millions of Italians and supported by more than 400 partners — remains a cornerstone of the country’s payment infrastructure.
The collaboration with Visa fits into this dynamic context, aiming to expand operational possibilities for banks and users while strengthening Italy’s role in the digital payments landscape.
“The project launched with Visa marks an important milestone in the evolution of BANCOMAT products, with the goal of providing banks and users with increasingly digital services that can also be used beyond national borders,” said Fabrizio Burlando, CEO of BANCOMAT S.p.A.
“This collaboration will allow us to enhance BANCOMAT’s Italy-based infrastructure through Visa’s technology and global acceptance network, enabling new features and expanding the customer experience. The model allows us to maintain strong local oversight while benefitting from the international acceptance capabilities of a global player. We are confident that this partnership will deliver greater value to Italian banks and their customers.”
“The launch of the BANCOMAT Pay pilot project represents a significant step forward in the innovation of mobile payments in Italy,” commented Stefano Stoppani, Country Manager of Visa in Italy.
“At Visa, we harness our technological capabilities to support our partners. This project demonstrates our commitment to fostering the evolution of Italy’s payment ecosystem and to offering users simple, secure and universally accepted payment solutions.”
The pilot will be based on VisaPay, Visa’s new solution for digital wallets, designed to deliver security and scalability by leveraging Visa’s advanced tokenization technology. The pilot will test the main features of the extended version of BANCOMAT Pay, including:
