THE ATV BANCOMAT TENNIS OPEN PRESENTED

Rome, July 3, 2025 — In the prestigious setting of the Circolo Antico Tiro a Volo, the curtain has been raised on the 15th edition of the ATV Bancomat Tennis Open. The long-awaited event, promoted to WTA 125 this year, was officially presented at a press conference. From 14 to 20 July, the red clay of the Capitoline Circle will welcome the protagonists on the field, engaged in what, thanks to the upgrade and support of the title sponsor Bancomat, the most widespread and recognized payment circuit in Italy, becomes one of the most important tournaments on the peninsula.

For the occasion, the entry list of the tournament has also been unveiled, which will feature Martina Trevisan among its protagonists: champion of the 2015 edition, able to take her first steps here before going up to 18th position in the world ranking, of reaching a semifinal at Roland Garros and of winning the Billie Jean King Cup with the Italian national team. We talked about her and the other players under the watchful eyes of the speakers: Giorgio Averni, president of the Circolo Antico Tiro a Volo; Alessandro Onorato, advisor for Major Events, Sports, Tourism and Fashion of the City of Rome; Massimo Itta, Chief Commercial Officer of Bancomat; Giulia Soresina, FITP Advisor; Giuseppe Centro, sports advisor of the Circolo Antico Tiro a Volo and member of the organizing committee and Adriano Albanesi, director of the tournament. As usual, the many tennis fans, coming from Rome and beyond, will be able to attend all the matches with free admission.

Entry list, not only Trevisan — After undergoing foot surgery in March, Martina Trevisan is ready to return to the field. The Italian national tennis player will play Basta the week before, then she will return to a place particularly dear to her such as the Ancient Shooting. At 22, she was champion of the 2015 edition of the tournament and today, at 31, she returns to tread the Roman red clay thanks to exploits such as the semifinal at Roland Garros 2022 and last year's triumph in the Billie Jean King Cup. After her injury, the Tuscan tennis player starts again from position number 188 in the world, but she remains a fearsome rival for everyone. Waiting for the wild cards, the other two Italians already sure of a place in the main draw are Nuria Brancaccio (n.183 WTA) and the young Giorgia Pedone (n.216 WTA). Leading the seeding will be the former number 19 in the world, with a quarter-final at the US Open under his belt, Varvara Lepchenko (now No. 121 WTA). But in a tournament that has always winked at the champions of the future, the spotlight will also be on former number 1 in the world under 18 Petra Marcinko and on the increasingly promising Hanne Vandewinkel. Finally, at the starting line, there is also Oksana Selekhmeteva, the reigning champion who will try to defend the title.

President Averni's satisfaction — Expectations are growing for an edition that promises to be memorable, as confirmed by the entry list between certainties and promising young people. Many Italians are expected on the field, also thanks to the support of the wild cards available to the technical sector and the captain of Billie Jean King Cup Tathiana Garbin, a historic friend of the tournament. “Being part of the group of tournaments organized under the umbrella of the WTA is a source of great pride for us - says Giorgio Averni, president of the Circolo Antico Tiro a Volo -. We are among the few in Italy. Events like this are fundamental tools for the development of tennis, especially at a time of growing popularity. In the past, the ATV Tennis Open welcomed Jasmine Paolini and many future champions, such as world number 1 Sabalenka. I am proud of the value of an event that has contributed to the beginning of so many extraordinary careers.” A satisfaction also shared by Giuseppe Centro, the Club's sports advisor and member of the organizing committee: “We are proud and honored by this upgrade. Having been chosen by the Federation to make this leap and represent Italy in the WTA 125 category is a great recognition. We have reached the 15th edition and are ready to host great athletes. The organization will guarantee, as always, the best reception and great availability to professionals and players, for whom additional spaces have been reserved to ensure maximum comfort and privacy.”

Massimo ITTA, Chief Commercial Officer of Bancomat, said: “Tennis is now not only a great sporting passion of Italians but a true excellence of our country and for Bancomat, a leading reality in its market and which is close to citizens every day, it was absolutely natural to support a tournament that brings great tennis to the Capital. This partnership further strengthens Bancomat's link with Italian sport, with which we share values such as passion, innovation and the search for excellence.”

Historical notes — The ATV Tennis Open is now in its fifteenth edition this year, the first as WTA 125. The first tournament, worth $10,000, kicked off in 2005, with the then Italian Romina Oprandia winning the title. The qualitative leap came in 2007, when the prize money was raised to $100,000 in an edition with a stellar participation field: the Belgian Caroline Maes won, but there are two future Top 10 and Slam finalists such as Sara Errani and Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova (then fifteen); as well as Mirjana Lucic and Kristen Flipkens, who in the following years would have reached the semifinals at the Australian Open and Wimbledon respectively. Also on that scoreboard was Alizè Cornet, who the following year would have reached the final at the Internationals BNL d'Italia, close to a place in the top ten in the world. 2008 was the year of the success of Tathiana Garbin, the current captain of the Italian Billie Jean King Cup, who promptly returns to the Antico Tiro a Volo to follow the most promising girls in blue tennis. That was also the edition of the then 16-year-old Camila Giorgi. In 2015 it was Martina Trevisan, a semifinalist at Roland Garros 2022, who triumphed. The 2018 final is history: the very young Dayana Yastremska and Anastasia Potapova, who two years earlier had faced each other in the Wimbledon junior final, are competing for the title. In 2019 it was Sara Errani's turn, who returned to success after a ride that was as difficult as it was exciting. In the last three successful editions of the Croatian Tara Wurth (2022), the Spanish Jessica Bouzas Maneiro (2023) and the Russian Oksana Selekhmeteva. The Ancient Flying Shooting, however, has also launched players on the big stages who were unable to win the coveted trophy on the Capitoline fields. There are eight Top 10 on the list: Sara Errani, Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova, Jelena Dokic, Julia Goerges, Jessica Pegula, Aryna Sabalenka, Elena Rybakina and Jasmine Paolini. The current number 4 in the world, finalist in 2024 at Roland Garros and Wimbledon, reigning champion of the Billie Jean King Cup and the Internationals BNL d'Italia, passed through the fields of the ATV Tennis Open in the early years of her wonderful career.
